Disability Insurance helps you when you're totally down and out. It's during that low time when you need a helping hand the most; and so often, you find out that you have nothing left.

With disability Insurance insurance however, you can ensure that even if worse comes to worse, you will be taken care of. Disability benefits can make sure that if you are unable to work because of an injury or illness, that you will still have sufficient income.

Short Term Disability

Short term disability insurance pays a percentage of your usual salary or wage if you become disabled on a temporary basis and have to miss work because of it. A policy might provide you with part of your usual income, which could be one half or even two thirds of your weekly or biweekly paycheck. Disability insurance would not cover any injuries that were suffered on the job, however. This would be workers compensation insurance, and would be paid for by the company who employs you.

What reasons might you require short term disability insurance? You could injure your back, while off working hours, or suffer from other unexpected injuries. You could have digestive or intestinal problems. Women could have to take time off work due to a pregnancy. The possibilities are many for unexpected medical conditions are numerous.

Long Term Disability

Long term disability insurance, obviously covers injuries or illnesses that will stay with you for a while. When short term policy benefits end, which is generally within three to six months) then a long term insurance policy will start to cover your partial salary. (About the same figure, from one half to two thirds of your original paycheck) You will receive benefits until you reach the retirement age of sixty five.

Why might you need long term disability insurance? Again, any number of reasons including pregnancy complications, chronic depression, back injures and cardiovascular problems, or other problems that would legitimately keep you out of work for an indefinite period of time.

Disability insurance is not always a pleasant subject matter. Nobody wants to think of themselves as disabled or in need of help. But when your family is involved, you must do whatever it takes to pay the bills and keep your home. Disability insurance is a protection.
