How Dental Insurance Works

Dental Insurance

Dental insurance works like most forms of health insurance. But sometimes regular health insurance doesn't not include any dental coverage. Therefore you might have to purchase dental insurance in addition to traditional health care—provided you care about your teeth!

How The Program Works

With most forms of dental Insurance plans, you will pay a monthly premium for regular coverage and then the insurance company will pay for all or just a part of your dental expenses. How do premiums work? The more you pay in premiums, the less you will have to pay when it comes time to work on your teeth. And dental procedures can certainly be expensive!

A good dental insurance plan will cover most of the basic procedures in the office, such as cleanings and check ups. When it comes time for major dental surgery, however, not all dental policies are sure to cover those expenses. Unfortunately, it seems the more expensive the dental procedure is, the less likely the dental insurance company will cover it.

Choosing Insurance For Your Mouth

But this is not always the case. Some dental insurance plans are fair and offer routine coverage as well as major dental procedures. It's just a matter of carefully analyzing what the plan details are. Most plans will list their major plan details online and provide quotes on premiums and deductibles. Shopping for dental insurance has never been easier.

Do you need dental insurance? You certainly don't want to pay extra for minimal protection that is already covered in your individual health insurance plan. But at the same time, you may be able to find a dental insurance program that covers much more expenses than your regular health care plan does.

Dental insurance is increasing in popularity. More and more Americans are finding that they are unsatisfied with their current dental coverage (usually from a group insurance policy that an employer provides) or are becoming self employed and have no group insurance to provide dental. Perhaps they choose one health insurance plan that is affordable, but is lacking in dental care. Independent dental insurance can take care of the “gap” between your teeth expenses.
